Frequently Asked Questions
What age range does Zia Playschool serve?
We serve children ages 2.5 to 5 years old.
What are the hours?
Drop off is between 8:45-9:00am. Pick up is at 3pm.
Why don't you have a schedule more conducive to working parents?
As a new playschool our schedule is currently in its beginning stages. We will have a 5 day option available for the 2019-2020 year, however, our hours will continue to span 9am-3pm as this is already a long day for toddlers and preschoolers to be away from home. We encourage parents in our community to connect and develop an extended care arrangement if they find the 3pm time incompatible with their work schedules.
Does my child need to be potty trained to enroll?
Potty training is a long-winding journey with multiple successes and regressions. While a child may still be in diapers for sleeping we prioritize enrollment for those children who have already begun the potty-training process.
Do you have a dress code?
Children do not wear uniforms though we do require parents to avoid dressing their children in clothes with obvious branding. Clothes that are comfortable and easy to move in work best. We strongly suggest that dresses and skirts be saved for time outside of school as they do not allow the same freedom of movement that children who are wearing shorts or pants are afforded in exploring their full range of motion. It is important that parents also keep in mind that we go outside in all but the most inclement weather so it is important to dress a child in layers during the colder months.
Why can't my child wear clothes with cartoon characters and other branding?
Since your child is still very young and impressionable the images they see focus where their attention lies. To avoid the narrowing of creativity that occurs when a child becomes accustomed to only thinking in storylines that have been presented to him or her during screen time we want children in more subtle clothing so that their imaginations can truly soar over the course of the day.
Are you going to try and force my family to stop watching television?
Certainly not. Let's be honest here...television is our modern day storyteller. The tales it displays can be a comfort and can also teach us about things we might not see in our everyday lives. When it is used as a tool it can have quite a refreshing effect on our lives. However, when television is part of a habit of desensitizing ourselves to the three-dimensional world we live in and that's the best of what we are exposing our young children to then we aren't helping them connect to their bodies, their emotions, or the earth. We encourage our parents to actively use nature as a balance when their children are exposed to screen time. We suggest a 2:1, or better yet a 3:1 ratio of screen time [e.g. If your child watches a 30 min. program that they get at least an hour or an hour and a half to explore outside and have some access to nature, however small].
Is there any kind of transitional period when my child starts at Zia?
Most definitely! While we do not encourage parents to stay with their child during the day we can provide an earlier pick up time until a child has built a certain amount of rapport with staff and other students. Also, visits can be arranged to see the space prior to joining the group. Every child is different and the transition time may vary for each. We will do our best to accommodate each family given their specific needs.
